How to Stay Rattlesnake Smart this Summer

Rattlesnakes are very mild-mannered snakes, who go out of their way not to waste a bite on protecting themselves. As long as you give them space and don’t bother them, they will not bother you. As you hike, follow these safety tips to prevent accidentally scaring a rattlesnake.
Night Hike at Byrne Preserve
Last month, Grassroots Ecology staff and community members explored Byrne Preserve at night, viewing the oak woodland for the first time in the ultraviolet spectrum. We carried small ultraviolet flashlights that allowed us to examine the world that we cannot see with the naked eye.
