Our Redwood Creek restoration site is located in the heart of downtown Redwood City within an ecologically rich marsh-upland transition zone. Our work since 2018 has aimed to improve riparian habitat and water quality by planting native trees and riparian plants, removing trash and invasive species - including palm trees - and expanding the native urban tree canopy. With the help of community volunteers, this segment of creek provides multiple benefits to the watershed, the urban forest, and the surrounding community.

OUR RESTORATION WORK AT REDWOOD CREEK

Unlike much of our other work within open space preserves, our work at Redwood Creek is unique in that it runs along the banks of an urban stretch of a creek.

Our work began in 2018 with the removal of 40 non-native palm trees from the banks. To replace the palm trees, our partner CityTrees planted native street trees along the creek including oaks, buckeyes, and big leaf maples. Volunteers, interns, and the San Jose Conservation Corps worked with us to remove stands of fennel and other invasive plants and install a variety of beneficial native riparian plants.

The collaborative effort of this project has created a vibrant and biologically diverse landscape right in the heart of downtown Redwood City. Wildlife monitoring in 2021 found more than 120 species of birds, terrestrial arthropods, amphibians, fish, mammals, and pollinators within our restoration area.

VISIT REDWOOD CREEK

Our Redwood Creek site is located at the intersection of Veterans Blvd and Main St. in Redwood City, CA 94063.

There is metered street parking along Veterans Blvd and Main St near the site. Roads to the site are paved through downtown Redwood City. Be sure to lock your car and take all valuables with you. The site is also accessible by public transportation via a 10 minute walk from the Redwood City Caltrain station, or via SamTrans route 270 at the Kaiser Hospital stop. Redwood City Transit Center is 0.6 miles from the site. There are many roads with bike lanes and sidewalks that lead to the site, but no bike racks.

There are no set trails at Redwood Creek, and the site has steep terrain in some places along the creek banks. There is limited shade at Redwood Creek and no water fountains, so come prepared with lots of water and a hat.

Two ADA compliant restrooms are available across the street at a gas station. There is cell service available.
